At Darlington Mind, we understand that mental health support looks different for everyone. For some, it might be counselling. For others, a creative group or a bit of gardening. And for many, the simple act of walking with a dog can make a world of difference.
With National Dog Day coming up on 26th August, we’re celebrating the special bond between humans and dogs, and shining a light on how that connection can support better mental wellbeing.
Dogs and Mental Health: More Than Just Companions
It’s no surprise that dogs are often described as “man’s best friend.” But there’s science behind it too.
Studies have shown that spending time with dogs can:
- Lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone)
- Increase oxytocin (the feel-good hormone linked to bonding)
- Reduce feelings of loneliness
- Encourage regular movement and fresh air
Just being around a calm, friendly dog can help ease anxiety, reduce isolation and boost your mood. That’s why dogs play a part in some of our wellbeing services here at Darlington Mind.
Pawsitive Strides: Walking Towards Wellness
Our Pawsitive Strides dog walking group is a relaxed, supportive activity open to adults in Darlington and the surrounding area.
You don’t need to own a dog to come along, just a willingness to get outdoors, connect with others and take gentle steps toward better mental health.
Walking with dogs can:
- Help you feel grounded and present
- Encourage routine and structure
- Offer low-pressure social interaction
- Bring joy in a natural, non-judgemental way
Whether you're struggling with stress, low mood, or just feel a bit disconnected, this group offers a calm space to feel supported.
