National Fitness Day: Move for Your Mind

Today is National Fitness Day, a chance to celebrate the role that physical activity plays in supporting not just our physical health, but our mental wellbeing too.

While we often think of fitness in terms of exercise routines or gym sessions, staying active can be much simpler and more meaningful. At Darlington Mind, we see daily how even gentle movement can make a real difference to how people feel.

Be Active – One of the Five Ways to Wellbeing

At Darlington Mind, we promote the Five Ways to Wellbeing, a set of evidence-based actions to improve mental health. One of these is being active.

This doesn’t mean you need to take on intense workouts or run marathons. Walking, stretching, or moving in ways that feel good for you can all help boost your mood. Regular physical activity encourages the release of endorphins, which can reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and enhance overall mental resilience.

What the Research Says

There is growing evidence that regular physical activity has a positive impact on mental health. According to the Mental Health Foundation, physical activity can help:

  • Reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Improve mood and concentration
  • Lower levels of stress
  • Enhance self-esteem and confidence
  • Support better sleep patterns

In fact, even low-intensity activity such as walking has been shown to improve mental wellbeing, especially when done outdoors or in green spaces. Being active also helps create routine, structure and social connection, all of which play a part in maintaining good mental health.
