Funding Secured for Marcus Movers

Darlington Mind launches Marcus Movers walking programme inspired by Pride of Britain winner Marcus Skeet

The Darlington-based mental health charity will deliver walking-based mental-health programmes under the Marcus’s Movers initiative.

The programme is inspired by Marcus Skeet, winner of a Special Recognition Award at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards. His remarkable journey dealing with mental health problems from a young age to record-breaking charity fundraising motivated public donations to support walking and wellbeing in communities.

Marcus Movers aims to improve mental wellbeing, increase physical activity levels, and build social connectedness through accessible, community-based group sessions.

Marcus Hawthorn, Strategic Development Manager at Darlington Mind said: "Staying active and engaging with others is shown to benefit our mental health, but we recognise that taking the initial step can feel challenging.

Marcus Movers is about creating a friendly and supportive space where people can enjoy being active while talking openly about their mental health if they want to. As May is National Walking Month, this seems like the perfect time for Marcus Movers to make an impact.”

A spokesperson for Pride of Britain said: "Everyone at Pride of Britain is absolutely delighted to see Marcus' Movers groups starting up all over the country. They are going to make a life-changing difference to so many people, and we are proud that our audience could help Marcus and Mind make them a reality. Marcus is an incredible young man, and his positive impact just continues to grow."

Hayley Jarvis, Head of Physical Activity at Mind, said: “Marcus’s story shows the incredible power that physical activity and community support can have for people struggling with their mental health. Thanks to the generosity of everyone who supported this initiative, local Minds can now offer Marcus’s Movers groups across the country and help more people find a safe space to talk, connect and move for their wellbeing.”
