National Mind and Local Minds: What's the Difference?
If you've ever wondered what the difference is between National Mind and your local Mind, you're not alone. It's one of the questions we're asked most often.
Many people assume that Mind is one national charity with branches across the country. In reality, it's a network of independent charities working towards the same goal – better mental health for everyone.
So, what does that mean in practice?
National Mind
National Mind is the mental health charity for England and Wales.
Its focus is on improving mental health on a national scale. It campaigns for better mental health services, influences government policy, campaigns for change, raises awareness, carries out research, provides trusted information and resources, and runs national helplines.
Its work helps create lasting change, making mental health a priority across the country.
Local Minds
Alongside National Mind are more than 100 independent Local Minds, each supporting the communities they know best.
We're one of them.
At Darlington Mind, we provide mental health support across Darlington, South Durham, Hambleton and Richmondshire. If you live in Hambleton or Richmondshire, you'll often know us as Mind in Hambleton & Richmondshire. Although the name is slightly different, we're the same charity, with the same staff, the same trustees and the same commitment to supporting local people.
Every Local Mind is independent because every community is different. The mental health needs of someone living in rural North Yorkshire won't necessarily be the same as those of someone living in a large city. Being independent allows Local Minds to shape their services around the people they support.
That's why our services have been developed to meet the needs of our communities. We offer practical support including counselling, support groups, emotional resilience courses, peer support, walking groups, supported living, workplace wellbeing services and opportunities for people to connect with others. We listen to local people and adapt our services as those needs change. Every pound we raise goes to fund services in our communities locally.
Independent, but connected
National Mind and Local Minds have different roles which complement each other. National Mind helps shape the future of mental health nationally, and Local Minds help people access services that improve their mental health and wellbeing close to home.
We share the same overall purpose, we share the familiar Mind branding and values, but at Darlington Mind we make our own decisions locally to provide the support directly within our communities that people need today.
Darlington Mind is governed by local trustees, our staff live and work within the communities they support, and our services are designed around local need.
Being part of the Mind network means we can benefit from shared knowledge, national campaigns and a trusted reputation. Being independent means we can respond quickly to the issues affecting people in our own communities.
It's the best of both worlds.
Why Local Minds don't all offer the same services
If you've visited another Local Mind's website, you may have noticed they offer different services to ours.
That's completely normal.
Each Local Mind is an independent charity serving a different area. Some communities may need more support for young people, others may focus on employment, crisis support or reducing rural isolation.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to mental health, so there isn't a one-size-fits-all Local Mind.
Our priority is providing services that make a real difference to people living across Darlington, South Durham, Hambleton and Richmondshire.
We are your Local Mind
Whether you know us as Darlington Mind or Mind in Hambleton & Richmondshire, we're here to support local people.
For some, we're the place they attended their first wellbeing group. For others, we're the counsellor who listened when they needed someone to talk to, the course that helped them build resilience, or the volunteer who welcomed them through the door.
That's what being a Local Mind means.
We're proud to be part of the Mind network, but we're equally proud to be an independent local charity, delivering services shaped by the communities we serve every day.
So whether its for mental health support for you, or someone you know or care for, or volunteering, or fundraising to make a difference in our communities, its Darlington Mind and Mind in Hambleton and Richmondshire.
