Why Stigma Matters
Mental health problems are common and treatable. However, many people still feel they have to hide how they’re feeling. One of the biggest reasons? Stigma.
In fact, more than half of UK adults still believe there’s a great deal of shame around mental health issues [Source -Mind]. That needs to change and we can all be part of making that change happen.
What Is Stigma?
1. Public Stigma
Public stigma is when society holds negative attitudes or beliefs about people with mental health problems. It can show up in everyday life, like:
- Being judged for opening up
- Hurtful language or jokes
- Feeling excluded socially
- Being treated unfairly at work or school
These experiences can make someone feel alone or ashamed—even when they're doing their best to cope.
2. Self-Stigma
Self-stigma happens when someone starts to believe those negative messages. They might think:
- “I’m weak for feeling like this”
- “I’ll never get better”
- “People will think less of me”
This can make people feel isolated, lower their self-esteem and even stop them from reaching out for help.
Why Stigma Is Harmful
Stigma doesn’t just hurt feelings—it has real consequences:
- People may delay getting support
- Mental health problems can worsen over time
- It increases feelings of shame, guilt, or loneliness
- It can lead to discrimination in employment, housing, or health care
The truth is, anyone can struggle with their mental health, and everyone deserves support without judgement.
What You Can Do to Help
Even small actions can help break down stigma. Here are some things you can do today:
Speak about mental health in a kind and respectful way. Try using “a person living with anxiety” instead of “an anxious person”. It helps remind us that someone’s mental health challenge doesn’t define who they are.
- Start Honest Conversations
If someone you care about seems down, ask how they’re really feeling. Listen without judgement and let them know it’s okay to talk.
The more we understand mental health, the easier it becomes to talk about. Share helpful articles, support campaigns, and speak up when you hear myths or unhelpful comments.
- Support Mental Health Campaigns
Show support in your local area by signposting others to services like Darlington Mind. You never know who might be in need of our help.
